Hi, I’m Hannah - Local Gov Communications Manager, BSc Biomedical Science, creative writer and parent, 

Actual Anatomy started back when I had my first child who came along part-way through my BSc back in 2012. 

My dissertation project at Uni was dissection led, meaning I spent my day dissecting human cadavers for research, logging anatomical ‘abnormalities’, telling their stories through drawings and dat and compiling the information. My evenings and weekends were spent being a parent, navigating that new world. 

I very quickly realised that although I was doing a degree, specialising in anatomy, I was in no way comfortable using the correct terminology when teaching my own child!

This wasn’t acceptable and so I decided to make sure I wasn’t raising a person who felt the same shame and taboo I did when discussing their body.

Over the next decade I worked in healthcare communications, ran STEM events at libraries commissioned by government, delivered over 100 science parties for primary school aged children and visited over 50 schools for educational workshops.  Then diversifying into creative services, crisis communication and marketing for national brands in health, leisure, manufacturing and then Local Government.

As my children have grown they’ve taken on adults by storm, telling others the facts about their bodies as we go. With many awkward statements in asda, questions from school about ‘how do they know so much’ and raised eyebrows from other parents.

After some frank chats turns out people aren’t sure HOW to have those chats with children, partly because they never had it themselves. This is when Actual Anatonly was re-born, led by my own children to ho empower others.
